The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector lending arm of the World Bank, is funding the global expansion of factory farms.
According to The Guardian’s recently published report, $2.6 billion dollars from the IFC and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have been handed over to Big Meat corporations to expand factory farms in countries around the world, including India, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
Factory farms, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are an industrialized form of livestock production characterized by miserable animal welfare, abysmal worker health and safety conditions, and devastating environmental impacts.
The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Food and Agriculture Organization credit factory farming as major contributor of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). In fact, there is broad scientific consensus that we must eliminate industrial meat production if we are to turn back climate change and improve human health.
The World Bank Group's very own “Environmental and Social Framework” underscores the need for development and financing that supports ecological and sustainable development. Financing the expansion of factory farms is in clear violation of the Group’s Environmental and Social Framework.
