Stand with Coffee Farmers for Fair Livelihoods
“We cannot live on $0.90 per pound.” That’s the message that the coffee farmers behind SPP Global sent to the global coffee industry in April. Coffee prices have hit historic lows over the past year and continue to stay there, well below the cost of production.

The commodity market where green coffee is traded is notoriously volatile. This is not the first time that prices have been this low. Indeed, it was a price crisis in the ‘90s, with even lower prices, that caused a minimum price to be a centerpiece of fair trade certification as it developed.
But, decades on, coffee farmers continue to struggle. And, while coffee has evolved since the days when the primary choice was decaf or regular, too much about the way prices are set has not. Coffee farmers also face the impacts of our looming climate crisis. Changing weather patterns mean that drought and disease are disrupting crops and livelihoods. Add low yields and food crop failures to low prices and the impact is truly dire.
